Functional Family Therapy

FFT is deemed a best practice/family-based approach to providing treatment to youth who are exhibiting significant externalizing behaviors. It is a systems-based model of intervention/prevention, which incorporates various levels of the youth's interpersonal experiences which emphasizes the capitalization of the resources of the youth, their family and those of the multi-system involved. FFT's purpose is to foster resilience and ultimately decrease incidents of disruptive behavior for the youth.

Goals of FFT

  • To reduce intense/negative behavioral problems
  • Improve family communication, parenting practices and problem-solving skills
  • Increase the family's ability to access community resources

Treatment provided:

To male and female youth ages 10 to 18, who are demonstrating externalizing behaviors which negatively effect family functioning with:

  • Louisiana Medicaid Eligible
  • At least 1 adult caregiver participating in treatment
  • A DSM IV-TR diagnosis

Duration of Services: 

  • Typically 3 to 4 months;
  • Weekly intervention may range from 1-2 hours per week

Referrals accepted from: 

  • Court Recommended treatment from a Juvenile Court Judge
  • Office of Juvenile Justice 
  • Probation or Parole Officer 
  • Office of Community Services 
  • Law Enforcement Agency 
  • Mental Health Professionals 
  • School System Professionals 
  • Self Referral
